The destruction is much worse than I thought...
It’s a sad day for many… I have never witnessed anything like this! I am volunteering with Global Visionaries to do what we can to help clean up parts of the village of San Miguel Escobar (the village their office is located in). Check out this 40 second video clip of the destruction here. I was at the Global Visionaries office on Friday helping the staff prepare for an event (that is now postponed) before the hurricane hit. A mudslide here has killed at least 4 people and several are missing. The town looks much different now. The people are doing what they can to try to remove the mud, but the process is slow.
The village where the Avivara office and afterschool program is located, San Pedro Las Huertas, also had a lot of destruction. Read the Avivara newsletter about the destruction there.
Several search for loved ones amongst the mud and thousands in Guatemala are now homeless. The people here are in desperate need of food, water, and other basic supplies. Avivara is taking donations to give to a local church to supply food, water, and shelter to families. Donate here if you can. I made a donation this morning. Anything helps if you can take a minute and give a few dollars. In my next blog I hope to include pictures and film footage through my eyes as we are volunteering on the site tomorrow.
